Stump grinder types and sizes
Small walk-behind grinders fit through a gate. Tracked and larger self-propelled machines handle bigger stumps and slopes. Access decides which one your job needs.
The three kinds you will hear about
| Machine | Best for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Walk-behind grinder | Backyards with a narrow gate, small to medium stumps | Slower on big hardwood stumps |
| Tracked self-propelled grinder | Large stumps, slopes, soft ground | Needs a wider path in, around 36 to 48 inches |
| Skid-steer or truck-mounted cutter | Open lots, many stumps, large jobs | Heavy and not for small fenced yards |
Measure before you call
The biggest reason a quote changes on the day is a gate that is narrower than the crew expected. Measure the tightest point between the street and the stump and tell the crew.
- Gate or path width at the narrowest point.
- Slope or steps between the street and the stump.
- Fences, sprinkler heads and low branches on the route.
Wheels or tracks
Tracks spread the weight and leave less of a mark on wet Oklahoma clay. Wheels are fine on dry ground. If your yard stays soft after rain, ask for tracks or plywood.
Questions
Can a grinder get into a backyard?
Often yes. Small units are built to fit through a 36 inch gate. Tell the crew your measurement.
Does a bigger machine cost more?
Usually, because of the machine's cost to run. A big stump on a small machine can take longer, so it can end up costing the same or more.
