What changes the price
Why two quotes for the same yard can differ
Stump grinding is priced by the job, not the hour. These are the things crews look at:
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Stump width | A bigger cutting face means more time and more chips. |
| How many | Several in one visit are cheaper each than a single stump, because the machine is already there. |
| Access | A gate under about 3 feet wide, steps, or a slope can mean a smaller machine and slower work. |
| Roots | Big surface roots can be ground too, but that adds time. |
| Cleanup | Leaving the chips is cheapest. Hauling them away or backfilling with soil costs extra. |
We do not publish a price list here because it would be a guess. Read the full cost guide or send your details and a crew will give you a real number.
Tulsa notes
Oklahoma clay, ice and old trees
Tulsa lost a huge number of trees in the December 2007 ice storm, and storms still bring limbs and whole trees down most years. A lot of the stumps we hear about come from those storms.
Callery (Bradford) pears are common in older Tulsa neighborhoods. Their branches split easily in ice and wind, and when one comes out it leaves a stump with a wide root flare. Redbud and post oak stumps are usually easier.
Questions people ask
Before you book
Do I need to call 811 before the stump is ground?
Yes. Grinders cut up to about a foot down, so buried lines matter. Call 811 a few days ahead, and tell the crew about sprinkler lines, pet fences and anything you buried yourself, because those are not marked by the utilities.
How deep does the grinder go?
Most crews grind 4 to 8 inches below ground level. Ask for deeper if you plan to plant a new tree in the same spot.
What happens to the wood chips?
They stay in the hole and in a pile beside it unless you pay for haul-away. Many people keep them as mulch. Fresh chips can be hot and acidic for new grass, so mix soil in before you seed.
Can I plant grass or a new tree right away?
Grass: yes, once the chips are raked out and topped with soil. A new tree: either move a few feet over or have the crew grind deeper and fill with fresh soil.
What if the stump is next to a fence or house?
Tell the crew when you request the quote. Close to a fence or foundation usually means a smaller machine and slower work, and the crew can tell you before they arrive.
Is grinding better than pulling the stump out?
For most yards, yes. Pulling a stump out tears up the lawn and leaves a large hole. Grinding stays in one spot and leaves ground you can level.
