Stump grinding after a storm
Make the area safe first, cut and haul the tree second, grind the stump third. A stump is rarely an emergency.
The usual order
- Stay clear of any downed power line and call the utility.
- Get the fallen tree or limbs cut up and hauled away.
- Document the damage for insurance before the cleanup starts.
- Book the stump quote once the trunk is out of the way.
- Fill, level and reseed after the grinding.
What insurance may cover
Policies vary. Many cover removal of a tree that damages a covered structure, and often not the stump alone. Read your policy and call your agent before you hire anyone.
Beware door knockers
After storms, unsolicited crews appear. Ask for proof of insurance, get a written price, and do not pay a big deposit up front.
Send the form and a crew that works your area will call with a price. Free, and you can say no.
Questions
Can I grind right after the tree is cut?
Yes. There is no need to wait for the stump to dry.
Should I take the first quote after a storm?
Prices and availability swing in busy weeks. Get at least two if you can.
