Stump grinding and underground utilities
Public lines are marked free through 811. Private lines such as sprinklers, pet fences and landscape lighting are not, so you need to point them out.
Public vs private lines
| Type | Who marks it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Public utilities | 811 locators, free | Gas, power, water, sewer, phone, cable |
| Private lines | You, or a private locator | Sprinklers, pet fence wire, yard lights, a well line |
How deep a grinder goes
Most grinding stays within 6 to 12 inches of the surface. Many shallow lines sit in that same band, especially irrigation and low-voltage wire.
What to do
- Request locates at 811 a few business days ahead.
- Walk the crew over the area and show them where sprinkler heads and valves are.
- Take a photo of the marks before the machine starts.
If a line is hit, stop the work. For gas, leave the area and call the utility from a safe distance. For irrigation or low-voltage wire, shut off the system and tell the crew so the repair is documented.
Send the form and a crew that works your area will call with a price. Free, and you can say no.
Questions
How far ahead should I call 811?
A few business days is the usual advice. Check the 811 service for the current rule in your area.
Who pays if a sprinkler line is cut?
Settle that before work starts. Ask the crew whether they cover damage to lines you showed them.
