How per-inch stump grinding pricing works
Many crews price by the diameter of the stump, measured across the top, with a minimum charge. The rate varies, so compare the total, not the rate.
The idea
Wider stumps hold more wood, so crews often charge per inch of diameter, then add a job minimum so a tiny stump is still worth the trip.
How to measure
- Measure straight across the widest part of the top.
- Add the flare if roots stand above ground.
- Write down the number for each stump.
Why quotes differ
- Hardwood vs softwood.
- Number of stumps in the same visit.
- Access and slope.
- Chip haul-away.
- Surface roots included or not.
Compare the total
Ask each crew for a total in writing, including depth, roots and cleanup. That is the only fair comparison.
Send the form and a crew that works your area will call with a price. Free, and you can say no.
Questions
Is there a standard rate?
No. We do not publish one because it varies by crew, stump and access.
